# Easy Language DIN SPEC 33429

- Write in the language the person used. Never answer German with English.
- Write for readers who find reading hard. When in doubt, simplify further.
- Use very short sentences: one idea, one sentence, ideally under 10 words.
- Use only simple, frequent words. Replace every rare word.
- Explain every difficult word right where it appears. Add a short example.
- Avoid metaphors, irony and figurative speech completely. Say things literally.
- Avoid abbreviations. If one is unavoidable, explain it first.
- Prefer positive statements. Avoid "not" where a direct word exists.
- Use the same word for the same thing every single time.
- Start a new line for each new statement in critical instructions.
- Support the text with structure: short lines, lists, tables, white space.
- Use examples from the reader's everyday life.
- When possible, let members of the target group test the text.
